Een kunstenaar is een optimist,  anders zou hij geen kunstenaar zijn. Hij gelooft in en hoopt op de triomf  van het goede en het schone.

Biografie

Azad Saber is op 1 januari 1968 geboren in Sulaymaniyah, Zuid-Koerdistan (Irak). Hij groeide op in een artistieke familie en raakte van jongs af aan vertrouwd met verschillende kunststijlen. Zijn eerste schreden in de kunst - wereld zette hij onder leiding van zijn twee oudere broers Burhan en Aras, die ook kunste - naar zijn en hem aanmoedigden. Toen hij eenmaal zijn eigen weg en stijl had gevonden bleek hij de meeste affiniteit te hebben met een  zekere vorm van abstractie. Azad genoot een vrij grote bekendheid in zijn land toen hij daar nog woonde. Hij heeft een zichtbare  bijdrage geleverd aan de moderne Koerdische kunst en behoorde tot de jonge 
moderne  kunstenaars-generatie. Hij exposeerde regelmatig in binnen- en buitenland. Eind jaren ’90 kwam hij naar Nederland omdat hij zich belemmerd voelde door het repressieve regime in zijn land. Op dit moment woont hij in Finland. Kunst en schilderen zijn voor hem onlosmakelijk  verbonden met vrijheid. Dat is ook niet zo gek, want zijn naam ‘Azad’ betekent in het Koerdisch ‘vrijheid’. De laatste jaren maakt Azad relatief kleine schilde rijen in acryl, vaak meerluikjes op één doek. Zij bevatten realistische details in een meer abstracte omgeving. Grote en kleine emoties vinden hun vorm in een dichterlijke beeldtaal, open voor interpretatie. 

Biography

Azad Saber was born on 1 January 1968 in Sulaymaniyah, South Kurdistan (Iraq). He grew up in an artistic family and became familiar with different art styles during his child hood. His first steps in the art world were taken under the encouraging guidance of his two older brothers Burhan and Aras, who were also artists. When he had finally found his own way and style, it appeared that he had the most affinity with a certain kind of abstraction. Azad was quite well-known in his country when  he lived there. He made significant contributions 
to modern Kurdish art and was part of the young modern art generation. He regularly held exhibitions at home and abroad. At the end of 
the 90’s, he came to the Netherlands because he felt hampered by the repressive regime in his country. At the moment, he lives in Finland. For him, art and painting are inextricably bound to freedom. And this is not so strange, because his name ‘Azad’ means ‘freedom’ in Kurdish. In recent years, Azad has made relatively small acrylic paintings, often with multiple panels on one canvas. They show realistic details in more abstract surroundings. Big and small emotions are given a place in poetic imagery that is open for interpretation.

‘Schilderen werd de vreugde en vrij heid van mijn onderdrukte moeilijke leven; via het schilderen kan ik mij uitdrukken, mijn gedachten, mijn pijn. Sinds  ik mij realiseerde dat ik tot het Koerdische volk behoor, dat slaaf is in zijn eigen land en geen recht heeft om in vrede en met respect te leven zoals andere volken, gaat mijn werk over het menselijk leven, over de diverse culturen en het in vrijheid vermengen van materialen en spirituele waarden. 

Juist nu proef ik de smaak van vrijheid in een zelf opgelegde ballingschap, bij 
een volk dat menselijke waarden respec ­ teert, dus kan ik schilderen voor vrij heid en mensenrechten en een wereld creëren van kleur, een natie vrij van haat en  racisme. Ik schilder al mijn hele leven en ken geen andere manier om mijn  bood schap beter en luider te communiceren dan via mijn kunstenaarschap. Gelukkig is schilderen een universele taal die overal begrepen kan worden.’

‘Painting became the joy and  freedom of my suppressed, difficult life; through 
 painting I can express myself, my thoughts, my suffering, my pain. Since I realized that I belong to the Kurdish people, who became slaves in their homeland and have no right to live in peace, in freedom, and with due respect, my work focuses on people’s lives and their cultures, the interming ling of materials and spiritual values. Right now, I can taste freedom in a self­imposed exile among people who respect human values. I can enjoy life in painting for freedom and human rights, establishing a world of colour, a nation free from hate and racism. I have been painting all my life and know no other way to communicate my message better and louder than through my artistry. Fortunately, painting is a universal language that can be understood all around the globe.’
